Question by RICHARD T: What are the differences between alternating current and direct current?

I have read that direct current travels in only one direction, whereas ac goes back and forth. I can't fathom what this means in practice and I'm sure the differences can be explained more meaningfully.

Im not sure if this will help but alternating current (AC) flows in a sine wave where direct current (DC) is....well....direct.

most currents now a days are direct so one must buy a converter to change AC to DC
